About
Bio
Giosi Pinna develops his paintings through constructed conditions that shift control away from deliberate intention. Each work begins with clearly defined parameters: limits on the number of marks, strict time structures, the use of the non-dominant hand, or processes such as pouring in which gravity and fluidity determine the initial formation.
These constraints are designed to reduce compositional control and interrupt continuous decision-making. As the process unfolds, attention moves from planning and correction toward direct physical engagement. The painting develops through interaction between body, material behaviour, and predefined structure.
Chance plays an operational role within this framework. By allowing material processes such as dilution, flow, absorption, and drying time to influence the outcome, control is partially transferred beyond individual agency. This transfer is not accidental but intentional: it creates a working state in which the artist responds rather than directs.
The practice is informed by the automatist strategies of Surrealism and the material reworking associated with Abstract Expressionism. It is further shaped by readings in mysticism, philosophy, and Christian thought, which inform the mental and perceptual state from which the work proceeds. These sources do not function as subject matter; they structure orientation and attention.
The resulting paintings register the conditions of their making: a temporary displacement of authorship within a field beyond individual agency.
